Four books of short pieces from all eras selected by John Lenehan. In each of the four books that make up the Keynotes series there is a short piece by John Lenehan which includes an element of improvisation (Marching Tune, Transformations, In a Dream, Give me Five). Book one also includes a piece called "A Ghost in the Attic".
FABER MUSIC
"John Lenehan has done a really good job with Keynotes - these were the books I wanted to use right away. The selection and grading are excellent and they are a welcome supplement to the Classics to Moderns series, including more unusual repertoire and more up-to-date modern composers such as Carl Vine and Elissa Milne as well as Lenehan himself. Each piece is introduced with a few succinct and informative sentences to set it in context and to give performance hints."
Music Teacher
Each book also includes two new exciting features. First is a clever improvisation piece. The student is given a tone bank and rhythmic ideas and is written with repeats so it can be played differently each time. Second, each book contains what Lenehan describes as a 'quirky choice'. A ghost in the Attic from book 1 requires the last five notes of the piano to be silently held down while the right hand plays the melody - spooky harmonies begin to emerge. In book 3 the Haydn Minuet can be played backwards to sound exactly the same. These useful additions add variety to lessons.
