John Ireland Piano Works Vol. 2
The large-scale "Rhapsody", with its powerful Faurean overtones, is relished by John Lenehan, a strong and sympathetic interpreter, and time and again he makes you wonder at works aptly described as 'some of the most appealing English piano music written this century, too long neglected'. Try him in the "Decorations" (including "Island Spell" which, pace Debussy, is more l'isle triste than joyeuse) and you will discover playing of a special integrity and musicianship. Naxos's recordings are fine and I, for one, am already looking forward to Volume three.
Few British composers have matched the point and individuality of John Ireland's piano music, with its offbeat melodies and tangy dissonances. Making up for serious neglect, John Lenehan offers a score of miniatures including two of Ireland's most haunting pieces, The Towing Path and The Darkened Valley, a Blake inspiration. The longest work here is the Sonatina in three short movements, with the opening Moderato bringing echoes of Ireland's colourful Piano Concerto, the second a dark meditation leading to a galloping finale. Impeccable performances vividly recorded. (The Guardian)
