Striking the right keynote

Reviews
"Keynotes is a new series of graded piano material that has been hand picked by John Lenehan to serve up varied assortments of classical and modern pieces. Lenehan strived to provide an original and 'non obvious' repertoire, and although some familiar pieces are included by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Haydn and Debussy, the goal has been achieved with success. Less well-known pieces are included by composers such as Kabalevsky, Rowley, Bizet, Cimarosa and Couperin to name a few. Each book also includes two new exciting features. First is a clever improvisation piece. The student is given a tone bank and rhythmic ideas and is written with repeats so it can be played differently each time. Second, each book contains what Lenehan describes as a 'quirky choice'. A ghost in the Attic from book 1 requires the last five notes of the piano to be silently held down while the right hand plays the melody - spooky harmonies begin to emerge. In book 3 the Haydn Minuet can be played backwards to sound exactly the same. These useful additions add variety to lessons. With durable glossy covers, clear score layout and helpful notes, the Keynotes series presents first class material for students who want to take time out from graded exam work."
Music Teacher, December 2005
"John Lenehan, one of Britain's well-known pianists and teachers has turned to selecting repertoire which ranges across five centuries for this new graded series. As is to be expected, the books contain many old friends as well as several fascinating new names ... providing a balanced diet alongside the "greats". Clearly edited, and with concise performance notes to each piece, this is a most original and imaginative collection."
Piano Professional, January 2006
"John Lenehan has done a really good job with Keynotes - these were the books I wanted to use right away. The selection and grading are excellent and they are a welcome supplement to the Classics to Moderns series, including more unusual repertoire and more up-to-date modern composers such as Carl Vine and Elissa Milne. Each piece is introduced with a few succinct and informative sentences to set it in context and to give performance hints."

Schools Project

In 2001 as part of "New Horizons" - a three year community project run by the (then) National Federation of Music Societies and supported by BT and the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England, John Lenehan visited schools throughout the UK directing projects linking music and silent film. The aim of these projects was to give school students an exciting opportunity to write their own film music and hear it performed in a professional concert in conjunction with a local music club or society.
