Scénarios is a beautifully conceived and written collection of miniatures mostly in a contemplative style. The disc was recorded in the Menuhin Hall last Summer. "Pianist" magazine has published a feature on the disc....(excerpt below - the full article can be read here) Hailing from a musical family, whose father was a composer and woodwind player, Richard Harvey studied at the Royal College of Music, including composition classes with the late Stephen Dodgson, and was a member of the British Youth Symphony Orchestra. He formed his first group in the early 1970s, the progressive rock band ‘Gryphon’, famous both for its unique sound-world that successfully melded English folk with medieval and Renaissance elements and for touring regularly with ‘Yes’ both in the UK and the USA. Richard Harvey is renowned for the breadth and depth of his work as a composer, which includes the famous guitar concerto ‘Concerto Antico’, written for leading guitarist John Williams, and for which he was entered into the Classic FM Hall of Fame and also for his large-scale choral works, including the popular ‘Kyrie for the Magdalene’, co-written with Hans Zimmer and which was a musical highlight of Ron Howard’s notable film ‘The Da Vinci Code’, starring Tom Hanks. I am delighted that "Reflections" the new CD with the Saxophonist Huw Wiggin has made it to number 2 in the specialist classical music chart! Classic FM recorded a short recital of music from the album which was streamed live on facebook and can also be viewed here......
https://www.facebook.com/ClassicFM/videos/10156713143979260/?t=23 This month sees the release of "Reflections" a disc in which I partnered the marvellous Huw Wiggin in works for Saxophone and Piano. My first two CDs (way back in 1988!) were for sax and piano (with John Harle). I really enjoyed getting back into this sound world (one of the most natural instrumental combinations of all in my view). Here's an interview with Huw and myself. The CD is to be released on 15th June and Huw and I will be giving 2 launch concerts in London - 6th June at St Mary's, Perivale and 28th June at the Royal Overseas League in Central London. http://www.st-marys-perivale.org.uk/events-2018-06-06.shtml https://www.rosl.org.uk/events/event/764-reflections-album-launch I recently visited Almaty in Kazakhstan to perform tracks from a new album of music by Yerkesh Shakeyev. The gift of melody is a wonderful and often underrated quality in so-called "serious" music circles. Yerkesh has that gift and, just as Saint-Saens described his abilities, they come to him easily "like an apple tree produces apples." Shakeyev is a pop superstar across all former Soviet countries and recently begun writing in a more "classical" style. The album of piano music I recorded last year at Abbey Road (with some superb arrangements by Dimitriy Varelas), has just been released. The whole album can be listened to on spotify here I have also arranged and recorded two tracks with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and an album of cello music with Alexander Baillie. Both will be released in the near future. Here is the London Symphony Orchestra playing Shakeyev's "London" from a concert at Luke's in 2015. and here he sings one of the ballads that made him such a popular artist in all Russian-speaking countries. Also in March, a recording with Saxophonist Huw Wiggin will feature new arrangements of music by Piazzolla, Grieg, Schubert and others. Maksim Mrvica's new album featuring Nutcracker Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra will be available soon. John Lenehan will be performing some of his arrangements of the music of Yerkesh Shakeyev with the RPO at Cadogan Hall in May. Here is my arrangement of "My Princess", recorded with the RPO earlier this year - with thanks to its composer Yerkesh Shakeyev and his Daughter Meru who created the video. Happy New Year! |
